Wireless and Remote-Readable Devices Enable Precise Apartment-Specific Water Consumption Monitoring for Verto

Device Development for Real Needs – Billing Must Be Based on Actual Water Consumption

With the introduction of a new law in 2020, billing for domestic water in new multi-unit buildings must correspond to actual water consumption. According to the law, remotely readable meters must be installed in buildings, and billing must be based on the readings from these meters.

The VertoBlue system meets the water metering and billing requirements of this law by providing precise, apartment-specific water consumption monitoring that is transparent for both the property manager and the residents, anytime and anywhere.

As a device manufacturer, Nokeval has played a significant role in the design of the VertoBlue system, which is both wireless and remotely readable. The devices can be installed in both new and renovation projects, allowing water consumption to be monitored even hourly, anytime and anywhere.

Real-Time and Reliable Water Consumption Monitoring

Nokeval-manufactured devices in Verto’s water metering system include the apartment unit, apartment display, and data collection unit. These devices are domestically produced and manufactured at Nokeval’s electronics factory in Nokia.

These devices are a critical part of the VertoBlue water metering system, as every apartment-specific installation by Verto includes at least one apartment display and apartment unit. Additionally, each housing association requires at least one data collection unit for data transmission.

The apartment unit calculates the amount of water consumed and transmits the consumption data through the data collection unit to the VertoLive cloud service, where the property manager can access real-time water consumption data.

While the apartment unit and data collection unit are often out of sight for residents, the apartment display is visible and useful to the customer. Residents can monitor the immediate hot and cold water consumption, weekly consumption, or total consumption of their apartment, as well as the humidity and temperature of the apartment. This consumption data allows the resident to compare the billed water consumption with their water bill.

Residents can also use the apartment unit’s display to log into the VertoMobile service, where they can comprehensively view their apartment’s water consumption data.

According to the law, the water consumption measuring apartment unit must not be opened without triggering an alert from the service. The apartment unit is designed to send an alert if it is tampered with. Additionally, it notifies about any abnormalities in consumption, such as unusually high water usage. This feature allows for early detection of potential leaks or if a water tap has accidentally been left open.

Collaboration is About Working Together

The initial specifications for the water metering devices were developed jointly by Verto and Nokeval. The design process considered the entire lifecycle of the device, from purchase to daily use.

The global shortage of components posed a challenge to the progress of the development project, but these availability issues were successfully overcome through collaboration, ensuring device production even during challenging times.

With the successful completion of the extensive design and development project for the water metering devices, the collaboration continues with smaller device development projects, with regular and ongoing communication. There are plans for further collaboration on device development in the future.
